Johnny Depp intimidates as Whitey Bulger in a new Black Mass trailer.
The 52-year-old actor brings the real-life gangster to life in the preview, which follows Bulger's rise to power in the 1970s. The notorious criminal and his Winter Hill gang built an empire in Boston, Mass., before he became an FBI informant for 30 years.
Joel Edgerton co-stars as FBI agent John Connolly, with Benedict Cumberbatch as Bulger's brother, Mass. senator William "Billy" Bulger, and Dakota Johnson as Bulger's girlfriend, Lindsey Cyr. Kevin Bacon, Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard, Corey Stoll and Sienna Miller also have roles.
Black Mass is based on the Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill book of the same name, and opens in theaters September 18. The movie is directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart), and follows Bulger from the 1970s into the present decade.
