The EU is confident of "stability and continuity" in Germany despite the collapse of talks to form a coalition government, leaving Chancellor Angela Merkel scrambling to save the country from crisis.
"We are confident that the German constitutional process will provide the basis for the stability and continuity that has been a trademark of German politics," said European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas as Europe's biggest economy faces the prospect of snap elections to resolve the impasse.
