The US economy generated a lower-than-expected 173,000 new jobs in August, the Labor Department reported Friday.
But the overall unemployment rate fell to 5.1 percent, the lowest level since April 2008, helped in part by sharp upward revisions to the previous two months that added another 44,000 jobs to the number of new positions created.
