NBC canceled freshman comedy "The New Normal," which suffered in ratings before "The Voice" returned to the Tuesday-night lineup, The Hollywood Reporter said. The semi-autobiographical comedy from "Glee" writer Ryan Murphy and Ali Adler began in October under controversy after conservative watchdog groups protested the show's gay themes. The show follows a newly married gay couple trying to start a family. "The New Normal" was initially boosted in ratings in NBC's Tuesday block by "The Voice," but when the singing competition took a break between seasons, the comedy's ratings suffered, The Hollywood Reporter said Friday. Nearly all of NBC's freshman lineup has been canceled, except for "Hannibal" and "Save Me," which is scheduled to debut this summer.
