Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades has greeted Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on the new gas discovery, said a statement by spokesman for the Cypriot government.
Italy's Eni has discovered gas reserves of up to 30 trillion cubic feet in Egypt’s offshore Zohr prospect, making it the largest gas discovery ever in the country and in the Mediterranean Sea, the company announced on Sunday.
President Sisi underlined the need to strengthen energy security in the eastern Mediterranean to serve the peoples and countries of the region through cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt, according to the statement.
The two leaders tackled a raft of regional issues and Egypt's role to alleviate the crises of migrants and refugees, which Europe is facing.
Both leaders stressed the importance of ongoing discussions between Nicosia and Cairo in the field of energy.
