Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (EMPOWER), the world’s largest district cooling services provider, has recorded a milestone achievement in power saving by using district cooling instead of traditional air conditioning systems.
This saving in terms of power reached 837 MW in 2014. According to Empower; this could be equal to eliminating the CO2 emissions of more than 300,000 cars on UAE roads.
"District cooling has started yielding concrete results in its goal of energy saving in the UAE," said Ahmad bin Shafar, Chief Executive Officer of Empower. "We began in 2004 with only 4 MW of power saving, and today we crossed 836 MW."
"Since adopting district cooling services in the UAE, we realised that this technology could contribute to energy saving and conservation of natural resources. Indeed, our strategy has led to making us a major contributor in Dubai’s transition towards a green economy. Empower’s efforts are in line with the Dubai government initiatives in rational consumption, for companies or individuals," he added.
According to Bin Shafar, District Cooling systems are far more efficient than conventional systems, using half the energy consumed by existing traditional cooling systems, and at the same time meet the growing demand for cooling services in Dubai.
According to statistics, Dubai’s district cooling capacity amounts are increasing due to the expansion of the emirates development and construction projects. Empower’s acquires 70% of the district cooling market share in the UAE. Bin Shafar confirmed that district cooling is designed to achieve the interests of all parties, whether end users or developers, and the society at large. It also accelerates economic development by providing environment friendly services that reduce wastage of natural resources. He also confirmed that the expansion of Empower customer base makes the process of reducing the energy consumption a responsibility of everyone.
For 11 years, the company’s strategy has proven its effectiveness in reducing electricity use and reducing CO2 emissions.
Empower currently operates more than 1 Million RT, providing environmentally responsible district cooling services to large-scale real estate developments such as Jumeirah Group, Business Bay, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai International Financial Centre, Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Ibn Battuta Mall, Discovery Gardens, Dubai Healthcare City, Dubai World trade Centre Residences, Dubai Design District, among others.
