A four-cylinder as the base engine for the next generation Camaro? It\'s entirely possible. With all of the success the current generation Camaro has achieved so far, it should come as no surprise that the GM brass would very much like for there to be a follow-up. And according to information that has appeared on GMinsidenews, the sixth generation Camaro has already appeared on the GM product system as a 2016 model. While that may at first seem really far off, in the world of new model launches, we could see the next generation in as early as 36 months.Undoubtedly before then, the first spy photos will begin appearing. For now, GM is still keeping fairly mum on the details, but sources from the American automotive giant have confirmed that it will be powered with the next generation 6.2-liter small block V8 that will feature direct injection, active fuel management, and variable valve timing.Power to the rear wheel is expected to be courtesy of a six-speed manual and a seven-speed slushbox on non-V8 models. The V8\'s are likely to have an eight-speed auto and a seven-speed manual. Speaking of non-V8 models, this same source is claiming that GM plans to have a four-cylinder as the base engine.What\'s not final, however, is whether it\'ll be turbocharged or not. If it will be, expect for it to be a variant of the current 2.0-liter turbo. For now, nothing is official, but this latest information makes complete sense in regards to upcoming CAFE standards (hence the four pot). The improved V8 and advanced transmissions are needed in order to remain competitive with its main rival, the Ford Mustang GT.Photos displayed are of the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible.
