The United Emirates News Agency (WAM) has recently announced the upgrading of its news services to cover six key global languages in addition to already existing Arabic and English.
The launch of the revised web presence comes as part of efforts to further reinforce the UAE’s positive image and communicate its achievements internationally, while communicating the country’s message of moderation and tolerance, and disseminating its news and information in the world’s most popular languages.
The upgrading of its services comes in light of the National Media Council’s drive to enhance the media sector by engaging the people of the world and providing media coverage across a broad geographical spectrum, as the UAE continues to represent a global role model for co-existence between various nationalities, ethnicities and religions. The languages of WAM’s news services now include French, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish and Urdu, targeting a total of more than 100 countries around the world.
Commenting on the occasion, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of State and Chairman of the National Media Council, NMC, said, "The UAE has successfully attained a broad range of pioneering achievements and milestones thanks to the wise vision and policies of its leadership, therefore the expansion of WAM’s news services to include eight languages is instrumental to further reinforcing the UAE’s values that are built on tolerance, moderation and acceptance of others, all of which are key traits of Emiratis. The NMC has a role and responsibility to underscore these national achievements in line with the country’s belief in constructive and positive cooperation which has been instilled by the UAE’s leadership, and in light of the country’s status as a global role model for openness to the world’s cultures."
Dr. Al Jaber added, "Engaging various nations in their own language is an important means to reach out to the people of the world while highlighting the UAE’s positions on a range of regional and international affairs and issues, particularly in light of the UAE’s role as a key regional player, and its emphasis on supporting and cementing friendship and cooperation with other countries in the international community," WAM reported.
