Retired CBS newsman Bruce Dunning has died at New York\'s Mount Sinai Hospital from injuries suffered in a fall, the network said. He was 73. The New Jersey native spent most of his 35-year career at CBS News in the Far East. He retired in 2005 and died Monday. He is perhaps best known for covering a harrowing scene in which the crew of a 727 World Airways jet attempted to rescue women and children refugees from the airport in Da Nang at the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 and the plane was overrun by young Vietnamese military deserters. Dunning was one of the first American broadcast journalists to report from North Korea in 1979 and was the first CBS News reporter based in China when he opened the Beijing bureau in 1981. Dunning is survived by his longtime partner, artist Tetsunori Kawana, brother Alan and sister-in-law Anne, CBS said.
