Journalists in London have launched a new local branch of the NUJ in Lewisham. Lewisham NUJ has more than 500 members resident in the London Borough of Lewisham, and union members resident in neighbouring boroughs are welcome to join. Lewisham NUJ will operate in a different way to other union branches. For example, its monthly meetings will not be fixed to a specific day of the week or location. Instead, meeting places will move around the borough, and the day varied to allow involvement by members with other commitments. The new branch will welcome into its ranks communications professionals of all types who live or work within the local community. Community groups based in southeast London are encouraged to establish contact with Lewisham NUJ, to share news and events, and create a mutually beneficial relationship. Lewisham NUJ will facilitate networking and sharing of knowledge among union members and further afield. Through regular and informal social gatherings, anyone connected with the communications and media worlds, including public relations workers, photographers and students, can get involved and learn more about the NUJ. Coordinating the work of Lewisham NUJ are branch chair Dr Francis Sedgemore, secretary Chris Wheal, and treasurer Lynne Wallis. In the coming months, the branch will organise special talks with invited guest speakers who will share their knowledge on topical issues related to journalism. The next meeting will be held on Monday 25 June 2012, from 7pm in the Ravensbourne Arms, 323 Lewisham High Street, London SE13 6NR. NUJ .
