IFC says it has renewed its Helen Mirren-hosted, comedy series Documentary Now! for two additional seasons ahead of its network premiere Thursday.
This is the first time the cable TV network has picked up additional seasons of a series prior to its network debut.
IFC also announced the addition of a surprise, seventh episode to Season 1, up from the initial order of six episodes. The show parodies well-known documentaries, and was written and executive-produced by Saturday Night Live veterans Fred Armisen, Bill Hader and Seth Meyers. Armisen and Hader also appear in the show, along with various guest stars.
"This two-season renewal ahead of the show's initial debut is a huge nod to the creative and comedic genius of Fred, Bill and Seth," Jennifer Caserta, IFC's president, said in a statement Tuesday. "We're immensely proud of what they've created alongside [series co-creator and executive producer] Rhys [Thomas,] and thrilled with the buzz and critical acclaim the show is already receiving."
