Sudan’s largest university, the University of Khartoum, launch on Tuesday a two-day conference entitled “Islamic Sciences: Cultural Foundations.” Dr Intissar Saghiron al-Zein, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, said the conference was aimed at highlighting the role of Muslims in the science department as well as exposing the complementary relationship between science and culture from an Islamic perspective. The content of the conference, al-Zein said, falls into three categories, namely the concepts and characteristics of Islamic sciences, the historical and cultural framework of Islamic sciences and the current condition of Islamic sciences. The chairperson of the Department of Islamic Sciences, Dr Israa Mohammed al-Bashir, told Arabstoday that the event is part of a series of conferences that refers to the right Islamic basis. Al-Bashir referred to a recent conference held in Khartoum for ministers of higher education in Muslim countries and urged that funds be made available for scientific research for the service of society. Financial troubles, she said, however, should not be a reason to prevent us from achieving our goals of giving and spreading knowledge.
