His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah and President of American University of Sharjah (AUS), chaired a meeting of the AUS Board of Trustees held on Sunday, at the AUS campus. The Sharjah Ruler expressed satisfaction at the progress and development of the university and reviewed and approved a number of board resolutions pertaining to new and ongoing initiatives. Sheikh Sultan also thanked the members of the board for their continued efforts.
The AUS board approved the addition of a new Bachelor of Science in Physics to add to the growing roster of programmes offered at the university. The launch of the programme meets the growing need for Stem-related programmes in the region at a time when the UAE is heavily investing in initiatives in the space and energy sectors.
The central role of physics in technological advancements requires rigorous and innovative academic programmes to prepare students for the future. This degree will expand and enrich the university’s undergraduate programme offerings.
“We are very pleased to launch the new Bachelor of Science in Physics,” said Dr. Bjorn Kjerfve, Chancellor of AUS. “We are seeking to enhance and broaden the scope of our offerings in Stem fields. At AUS, we have always believed in responding to the industrial, economic and social needs of our environment.
Initiatives such as these are an integral part of our strategic goals and play an important role in contributing to the growth and development of the nation,” he added.
Chancellor Kjerfve also expressed his gratitude to Sheikh Sultan for his support to the university and to members of the AUS Board of Trustees for their efforts towards the growth and development of AUS. “We are very fortunate to have Sheikh Sultan guide and lead us. His continued support to AUS from its very inception has been instrumental in the success achieved by the university. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our board members for their time and support,” added Dr Kjerfve.
During the meeting, the board also discussed various other issues and passed a number of other resolutions, including approving the operating budget for fiscal year 2017. The board approved a number of faculty promotions and awarding of four-year rolling contracts following successful evaluations and recommendations. The board also passed a resolution to adopt a new IP policy for the university.
The board thanked Sheikh Sultan for his leadership and generous support to the university’s welfare.
