There is good news in store for Ranchi University (RU) Bachelor’s of education (B Ed) students. The varsity is planning to start a Master’s in education (M Ed) course soon. This means students will no longer have to go to other states to take up a post graduate course. Pro vice chancellor of RU, M Raziuddin, said, “University Grant Commission (UGC) had approached us in 2013 regarding sending them a proposal for starting M Ed course in the university. We have made a proposal and submitted it to the UGC a few days ago. We are waiting for their approval.” He added, “At present, our students who do a B Ed course has no other option but to go to other states to pursue a Master’s degree. Studying in other states proves expensive for the students because of which many drop the plan to continue.” Once the UGC approves the proposal sent by RU, a separate department will be set up for M Ed in a separate building. Raziuddin said, “Once the proposal is approved, 80% of the expenses of teaching and non-teaching staff from the department will be borne by the UGC and 20% by RU. If the proposal is approved then RU will become the first university in the state to start M Ed course and students from other universities in the state will also be able to study here. This will be the 23rd post graduate department under RU.” If the proposal is approved on time then the course will be started in the academic year 2014 itself. Students, who are at present enrolled into B Ed course in RU or have completed their course but did not continue studying because of lack of option, are excited about the plan. Satyabhama Thakur, who completed her B Ed in 2010 and is at present employed as a kindergarten teacher in a private school, said, “I was unable to continue my education as there is no option of obtaining a Master’s degree in education in the state and doing a course from elsewhere was not possible. I really hope that the plan to start an M Ed course materializes so that I can take it up and hope to get a better job.” Source: Education News
