Sheffield University has been praised for its work in supporting young people who have left the care system and have gone on to realise their potential through higher education. It has again received a Quality Mark from Buttle UK, a charity which supports young people in care, and the award ties in with National Care Leavers’ Week which runs until tomorrow. The Quality Mark celebrates the work institutions do to raise aspirations among children and young people in and leaving care, and to help them succeed in college, university and beyond. A key aim of Care Leavers’ Week is raising public awareness about an invisible minority who face obstacles as they enter adult life. The week also draws the attention of politicians to the lack of support for this vulnerable group and challenges them to make a difference. University outreach officer David Broomby said: “We believe that anyone with the ability and potential to succeed on our degree programmes should have the opportunity to do so. I am delighted we have been recognised as ‘exemplary’ by Buttle UK again.” Source: Education News
