Hanane Oubella, a 21-year-old college student, has been awarded the title of Miss Amazigh 2017, in a ceremony held on Friday in Agadir.
Oubella, who is from Douar Atban in the Aglou commune in the region of Tiznit, won the majority of audience and the jury votes.
The ceremony showcased the nomination of 10 candidates for the title from 60 applicants. The competition was based on special eligibilities including beauty, knowledge of Tamazight culture and mastery of the Tamazight language. The pageant was open to women from the ages of 18-28.
Official sponsor of the event, the Ishraqa Association, said in a press release that “Oubella will devote much of her time in community services, starting by organizing a medical caravan for the inhabitants of marginalized and isolated regions, in addition to activities designed to fight illiteracy.”
The competition was organized by the International University of Agadir, in celebration of the Amazigh New Year better known as Yennayer, which falls annually on January 12. This year in the Amazigh calendar is year 2967.
