Al Azhar is an independent Islamic institution, a statement by the institution has read.
Al Azhar, which is considered the main reference for Muslims around the world, does not hesitate to contact all the scholars of Islam and intellectuals in Saudi Arabia and all Arab and Muslim countries to coordinate and tackle matters for the good and interest of Islam and all Muslims, said the statement issued by the information center of Al Azhar on Sunday.
The information center also said that it followed up the document which was circulated by the various media outlets from WikiLeaks website that claimed that it was leaked from one of the Arab countries and tackled contacts held between Azhar and the embassy of this country in order to coordinate the Sunni position before meeting with representatives from the Shiite current in Iran.
It further affirmed that Al Azhar is keen on holding announced and periodic meetings among scholars to coordinate and unify stances in the joint religious matters and away of any political issues.
