London becomes the most googled city across the world for art galleries, performing arts and innovative art and design, according to new figures released Tuesday.

London & Partners, the official promotional company for London and Google, on Tuesday said that search insights from Google showed that theaters in the capital generated more searches than those in any other city.

It said searches for museums around the world ranked the Science Museum in London as the most googled museum, following by the Natural History Museum and the British Museum. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. ranked fourth and fifth.

"The data from Google also shows that London is the most searched for city in the world to visit," said London & Partners.

"Tourists are flocking to our great city in ever-increasing numbers, drawn by our exceptional cultural attractions and landmarks," said Boris Johnson, Mayor of London.

"It's fantastic that so many people across world are seeking out the Science Museum, and this new data provides yet more evidence of the world class status of British museums," said Ian Blatchford, director of the Science Museum.

Previous statistics also showed that museums and galleries in London received 17.9 million international visits, accounting for 57 percent of the total 31.5 million visits in 2014/2015.

The number of international visits at London's museums and galleries has risen by more than 19 percent over the last four years. French, U.S., Italian, Spanish and German visitors were the top five overseas markets of visiting London museums and galleries in 2014/2015.
