Ian McKellen stars in a first teaser trailer for Mr. Holmes.
The 75-year-old actor portrays a long-retired Sherlock Holmes who keeps to himself and tends to his bees in his old age. The character lives with his housekeeper, Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney), and her curious young son, Roger (Milo Parker).
The preview sees the legendary detective embark on a journey to solve one last case. The sleuth struggles with the deterioration of his mind and memory as he recalls his storied past in flashbacks and revisits an unsolved mystery involving an elusive woman.
Mr. Holmes is directed by Bill Condon, and based on Mitch Cullin novel A Slight Trick of the Mind. Condon is known for such films as Kinsey and Dreamgirls, and previously collaborated with McKellen on Gods and Monsters.
McKellen last appeared as the wizard Gandalf in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, and is scheduled for The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet with Gillian Anderson. He will also appear with Anthony Hopkins in a BBC adaptation of The Dresser.
