Scarlett Johansson has been offered the lead role in Ghost in the Shell.
The 29-year-old actress reportedly has a $10 million offer from DreamWorks to star as Motoko Kusanagi in a live-action remake. The Wolf of Wall Street actress Margot Robbie was previously rumored for the role, but appears to be attached to Suicide Squad instead.
Ghost in the Shell debuted as a manga by Masamune Shirow in 1989, and inspired several animated films and a Japanese television series. The story follows cyborg Major Motoko Kusanagi, a squad leader of fictional law enforcement division Public Security Section 9. Kusanagi and the organization work to counter cyber-crime and terrorist attacks.
DreamWorks co-owner Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to adapt the manga in 2009, and originally planned for the film to be a 3D movie. Rubert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) was hired in January to direct the live action remake.
Johansson most recently appeared in Lucy, and is scheduled for a number of upcoming features, including Avengers: Age of Ultron. The actress will also voice characters in short film Deep Down and Disney's live action remake of The Jungle Book.
