The film adaption of the novel Stargirl will be headed by Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, it was announced Wednesday.
Variety reports that the director has signed on to work with producer Kristin Hahn, Gotham Group, Hahnscape Entertainment and BCDF Productions to make Jerry Spinelli's novel a visual reality for the big screen.
Stargirl, published in 2000, follows the story of an odd, whimsical teenager as she makes the switch from homeschool to public school. When she confronts the status quo of her high school's culture, she meets and befriends the moderately popular Leo Borlock -- the book's narrator -- who can't quite figure her out and is enchanted by her mystery.
According to Variety, CAA will head domestic sales while Red Granite fronts international sales. Shooting for the film will begin October in New Mexico, according to a casting notice.
