Ahly and Zamalek will meet on January 29
Bitter rivals Ahly and Zamalek will meet on January 29 after the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Tuesday the fixtures for next season’s Premier League.
The Cairo derby will be held
on the final day of the league’s first round. The previous five league encounters between Ahly and Zamalek ended in draws.
Ahly scored a late equaliser to salvage a thrilling 2-2 draw with Zamalek in their last league meeting last season. The Red Devils went on to win a seventh consecutive title.
Both teams could also meet in the Egyptian Super Cup if Zamalek beat ENPPI in the Egypt Cup final next week.
The Super Cup is traditionally held before the season begins but the EFA said the match could be staged next year due to the hectic schedule.
Ahly will begin the defence of their campaign against Haras El-Hodoud while Zamalek take on Wadi Degla on 14 October.
The success-starved Zamalek, who are led by new coach Hassan Shehata, are seeking to win their first league title since 2004.
