Wafa Moussalli
Beirut - Nicola Azar

Wafa Moussalli Syrian actress Wafa Moussalli believes her TV drama “Born from the waist” was a huge success because it combined all the necessary components of a true drama such as suspense, excitement and the element of surprise. In an exclusive interview with Arabstoday she said that what sets this drama apart from any other is the fact that its author has been careful to present several emotional components, in addition to trying to bring to light the sentiments humans hold; one of which is loving money to the point of despair, and loving control and authority to the point of murder, in addition to many other things. She said that: “what drew my attention is that the Director of the drama, Maha Sharbatji, read the script and went really deep into the thinking and frame of mind of that of the author’s, which in turn made her deeply aware of what each character is like so that she is able to see the words reflected in actions and not just by words. This drama shows true Syrian society unsupervised.
As for the criticism on some of the cruel scenes presented in the drama Moussalli said that: Syrian drama is still at the stage of a “hobby.” But by hobby she did not mean that Syrian drama is unprofessional but that actors still deal with it how a lover would; like someone who is experimenting. She believes that Syrian drama often still goes down the route of adventure; therefore she does not feel that those scenes were strange at all. The actress pointed out that the Director of this drama knew how to keep the thin line between unjustified and exaggerated violence in other dramas and between the cries of a broken heart. The actress added that some people thought that this drama revealed several sides to the Syrian regime.
As for whether the drama was subject to stalling from the monitoring authorities she said “not at all,” pointing out that “any incident revealed in the drama has been approved by them.” She said that this drama has much more boldness and freedom than “Born from the waist” does, but that it was postponed for viewing until next year. The new drama is titled “Salty Life” and it is directed by Sharbatji and written by Fouad Humeirah. She pointed out that “Born from the wait” was filmed prior to the painful Syrian revolution.
Asked about environmental work and whether they grab a large number of viewers as before, especially that viewers now prefer watching relevant social dramas she said that she is pro current social dramas that talks about current societal issues, but that it is unfortunate that TV channels refused to show “Souk Okkath.” She said that everyone works for Ramadan and that it’s beome the most suited month for environmental dramas and not necessarily traditional ones such as “Lost Daia” and “Al Khurbeh,” as they depend on folklore and culture and a political state supported with history, and it is based on everyday life and how people live within each other without exaggeration. As for whether she is able to choose a similar role to the one she previously presented she confirmed that “nothing would stop that but it is imminent to get a different script as she does not only look at the role but at the script and storyline as a whole.
