Walking does make the body become healthy Keep walking is what one of the speakers at the 2nd Dubai International Physical Activity Forum suggested to ensure a hasty evolution in thought and culture in its
mobility towards a healthier society.
\"Over a short period of time, we seem to spend most of our lives sitting. In the guise of modernity and conveniences, we have slowly evolved into an immobile species. We were created as a mobile species and we need now to return to basics,\" Dr Peter Katzmarzyk Todd told participants at the 2nd Dubai International Physical Activity Forum yesterday.
Making a comparison of levels of activities with other mammals, Dr Todd noted that \"humans are less active than other species\".
Level of activity
\"Our level of activity is lower and this has come out with years and years of transition. Modern utilities and conveniences like cars and vehicles have sullied our lifestyle and we have forgotten our actual mobility,\" he said.
\"Physical inactivity is the fourth biggest risk factor internationally preceded by high blood pressure, use of tobacco and high blood sugar,\" he pointed out.
\"Cancer, heart ailments and strokes have increased over time and are today among the biggest killers. Hence, there is no alternative to creating awareness among the people.
\"Community-wide campaigns like Dubai Pulse affect everyone. They have to target the higher risk people, people who sit a lot. You need a change in mind-set. It needs to be a whole community-engaged involvement. There has to be a whole culture shift.\"
