Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah (UoS), has unveiled new plans to establish a centre of excellence for diabetes and endocrinology research, and a centre for nano medicine at the UoS' campus.
Sheikh Sultan made the announcement while addressing a graduation ceremony of the 6th cohort of the Colleges of Health Sciences and Medicine and the 7th cohort of the College of Pharmacy at the University City Hall in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Health, other Sheikhs and local officials and a number UoS' teaching and administrative staff.
H.H. said, 'The launch of the centre for diabetes and endocrinology research is prompted by the high percentage of diabetes prevalence in the UAE and the region at large. The facility will advance diagnostic and therapeutic research at national and regional levels and open up new and broader prospects for scientific research partnerships that aim to improve public health.' As for the nano medicine research centre, H.H. added, its mission will be to conduct advanced applied nano medicine research to find new treatments for cancers and diabetes.
During the ceremony, Sheikh Sultan was awarded the honorary fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
