Golf has won the Euro car award for the second time
Volkswagen Golf has been crowned the 2013 European Car of the Year by motoring journalists across Europe.
The Golf picked up an impressive 414 votes from 58 judges from
across 22 European countries, leaving rivals Toyota GT 86 and Subaru BRZ duo in joint second-place, with 202 votes, and the Volvo V40 into third with 189 votes.
Ford B-MAX (148 votes), Mercedes A-Class (138 votes), Renault Clio (128 votes), Peugeot 208 (120 votes) and Hyundai i30 (111 votes) completed the list.
Jury said that the new Golf had been "recognised for its overall balance and outstanding achievements in safety, fuel efficiency, dynamics and comfort."
Accepting the award, VW’s board member responsible for research and development, Dr Ulrich Hackenberg said: "I am a little bit proud. It’s a big honour to get this prize."
It is the second time that the Golf has won the award; with the last triumph coming in 1992.
