Analyst Diaa Rashwan is best known for his work on Islamism
Egyptian journalists have elected political analyst and al-Ahram Centre for Political and Strategic Studies (ACPSS) head Diaa Rashwan as new chairman at the top of the country’s Journalists Union
.Rashwan received 1,280 votes out of the total 2,339, seeing off nearest challenger Abdel Mohsen Salama, managing editor of al-Ahram newspaper, by more than 200 votes.
Nora Rashid meanwhile received 22 votes, Sayed Iskandarani 16 and Maghraby Mohamed only six.
Elections took place in union offices in Cairo and Alexandria on Friday.
Hundreds of journalists celebrated Rashwan’s victory, carrying him on their shoulders and chanting.
Political analyst Diaa Rashwan, who was born in 1960, is best known for his political studies and analysis into Islamist groups in Egypt and across the Arab world.
Rashwan joined ACPSS in 1981 and was appointed head in 2011.
