Moroccan premier, Abdelilah Benkirane
Rabat – Rachid Bougha
Moroccan premier Abdelilah Benkirane released a sharp statement on Saturday saying the media should assume its responsibility in dealing objectively with government-related news while maintaining its freedom. He also
warned of the \"negative effects of lack of objectivity in some media\".
The statement came as a response to certain publications which on Thursday allegedly misquoted the Islamist leader to \"incite social problems, protests and unrest\". Some reports alleged that Benkirane had said his government would forcibly expel the residents of old cities to protect them from death in case old structures collapsed. The reports enraged sections of the public, putting activists on a head-on collision with the authorities.
Other newspapers published “leaks” that King Mohamed VI, the country\'s ruling monarch, was unhappy with Benkirane\'s ruling Justice and Development Party and said so during a meeting with them, while another newspaper reported that the news was not true, saying that the meeting was calm and that king did not show any sign of discontent towards them.
