The University of Cairo council held a meeting on Wednesday, May 30, in which it revealed its expansion plans for education and research universities in Sheikh Zayed City, in addition to a number of service and social
projects which will be inaugurated next month. Head of Cairo University Dr Hossam Kamel, announced that a nanotechnology centre will be opened after it is equipped with research tools to work in the areas of nanotechnology as well the completion of a nuclear physics centre for graduates working in the field of nuclear reactors.
He also announced the opening, following renovations and development, of a guesthouse in the university for staff and guests as well as renovations to the rowing club in addition to expansion of the new central library on the university campus.
The university council highlighted the need for rationalising and producing a budget plan to purchase vehicles, office equipment and furniture, and to allocate funds for electricity and water consumption.
The council reviewed the draft amendment of some provisions in law which regulate universities, and the approval of the committee for education and scientific research, is to be presented to the Egyptian Parliament for implementation next July, with regard to salaries, election of university leaders including teaching assistants and professors.
The university council also approved the establishment of a psychology programme in the Faculty of Arts as well as the approval of a cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Engineering and its counterpart at the University of Kentucky, USA.
