January’s security clampdown resulted in 20 injuries, 5 of them critical Rabat – Judy Sabbagh The Moroccan Centre for Human Rights has demanded an impartial and independent investigation into the death of a student, Mohammed Alvezazi, who died following a security intervention at Fes University on January 14 and 15.The Centre urged judicial authorities open the investigation to probe the circumstances of Alvezazi’s death, following a “violent and excessive” security clampdown on student protests against denials to university housing and eating facilities.
In a statement, the rights group claimed the security operation had been violent, after 20 students were reportedly injured, five of them severely so, according to eyewitness reports compiled by the Centre.
14 students were also reportedly arrested and tortured before being referred to the judiciary.
