The 7.4-magnitude earthquake injured 11 people, damaged hundreds of homes and sent residents out onto the streets of the capital, Mexico City. The quake, which struck on Tuesday south of the Pacific resort of Acapulco, between the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca, was followed by several aftershocks, the US Geological Survey said. Initially, it had estimated the magnitude at 7.9. Mexico’s interior minister, Alejandro Poire, confirmed 11 people had been injured, two of them seriously. He did not provide further details. Guerrero governor Angel Aguirre said more than 1600 houses in four municipalities of the coastal region, known as the Costa Chica, had been damaged. It was one of the strongest quakes to shake the capital since 1985, when an 8.1-magnitude earthquake left between 6000 and 30000 dead, according to officials and rescue organisations respectively
