Muscat - Arab today

Pakistan will soon offer Pakistani citizens living abroad a one-stop-shop for complaints and referrals, and Oman can soon expect a surge of skilled white collar workers, according to the Chairman of the Overseas Pakistani Foundation (OPF), Amjad Malik.

There are eight million Pakistanis living overseas, with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) being heavily populated with 2 million of them. According to the latest January report from the National Centre for Statistic and Information (NCSI), Oman has more than 233,000 Pakistanis.

“Oman is a very important country, a brotherly country for Pakistan. Oman is considered the third best country for expats, and the relation is very strong. People come to Oman and feel at home. The way competitive airline rates are offered is an indication that people love to come and work and also love to go back and meet their folks.”

“We are trying to set up facilitation desks at all airports. We are reforming the whole online complaint system so that people can use their forms and lodge a complaint if they find any issues with airlines, with the desk, the Pakistani airport; even if they have any issues with the embassies. We are giving them an opportunity. So they share it with us, we take it to our welfare committee, and try to reform it by making recommendations to the board. We keep reporting to the Prime Minister what needs to be done in order to improve ourselves,” Malik said.

The Chairman of OPF also stated that there is a need for more people with “professional skills and brilliance” to come to Oman as a place for intellectual investment.

“Transport and the construction industry take the maximum load, but we have brains coming here to work and investing their skills. At the OPF Advisory Council we are taking role models from each country for that initiative so that we interact with them and seek enhancement of skills and experience in Pakistan exports, skilled manpower.”

“A lot of doctors go to the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. I interact with a couple from the organisations, which have around 13,000 doctors. So we will be welcoming skilled workers or people with professional skills and brilliance to come to Oman and the GCC to invest their skills and experience and to not be confined to the labour jobs. Our doctors, engineers and top role models in the IT sector should come and contribute to the Sultanate of Oman,” Malik added.
