Tehran Medical Sciences University Chancellor Mohammad Bagher Larijani says 30 percent of Iranians are overweight. In an interview with the Fars news agency, Larijani also said non-communicable diseases are on the rise in the country. “At least one fourth of the people are grappling with risk factors such as high blood pressure or extra weight,” Larijani explained. He went on to say that general risk factors are more common among men. For example, he said, “Osteoporosis is very serious in men, especially in old age.” Bone health is highly important for the elderly, however it is considered a neglected risk factor, he explained.
