Jamal Suleiman Prominent Syrian actor Jamal Suleiman plays the role of a military officer in the new Egyptian series “Al Shawari’ al Khalfiyah” (The Backstreets), who refuses to open fire on protesters, leading to

his dismissal from the army. The role Suleiman plays is the first of its kind in his career. Prominent Egyptian actress Laila Elwi stars in the drama with Suleiman.

Suleiman is spending more than 14 hours daily inside the studio to finish filming the series so that it can be aired during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.
Suleiman plays the role of Shukri Abdul Motaal an Egyptian army officer dismissed after refusing to fire on students during demonstrations. During the events of the drama, he falls in love with his neighbor played by Laila Elwi. His character is a widower and father of two girls, played by Miyar Al Ghayti and Mariam Hasan.
The director of the series, Jamal Abd Al Hamid, is also working long hours to finish the series before Ramadan.
Construction of the set cost over 3 million Egyptian pounds to create a replica of Abd Al Aziz Street, one of the most popular streets in central Cairo. The neighborhood on Abd Al Aziz Street embodies various models of the middle class in Egyptian society that live together in harmony.
The drama is scheduled to air on Dubai TV, Matat Masr, CBC Abu Dhabi, and negotiations are currently being held with Egyptian television to air the series on its different channels.
The story of the drama was written by Abd Al Rahman Sharkawi, and the screenplay and dialogue by Medhat Al Adel. The cast includes Jamal Suleiman, Laila Elwi, and Sami AlAdel, Jehan Fadel, Mahmoud Al Jundi, and Houria Farghali, Mohammed Sharnoubi, in addition to a group of new faces.
