On Thur 20 Feb, Doum Cultural Foundation will screen Oscar-nominated 'Good Night and Good Luck' in collaboration with US embassy in Cairo, followed by discussion on freedom of expression and journalists' mission Good Night and Good Luck -- nominated for six academy awards in 2006 including best picture, best director and best actor in a leading role -- will be screened on Thursday 20 February at the Doum Cultural Foundation, in collaboration with the US Embassy in Cairo. Directed and written by George Clooney, the film stars David Strathairn, Patricia Clarkson, Jeff Daniels, Frank Langella, Robert Downey Jr. and Clooney himself. In the early 1950s, as America battled with the threat of Communism in what became known as 'The Second Red Scare', Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy capitalised on prevalent fears, heightening the often irrational and undue sense of panic and paranoia with anti-communist pursuits. Good Night and Good Luck follows the attempts of CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow and his producer Fred W. Friendly to bring down McCarthy and expose his ill intentions to the American public, which they eventually succeeded in doing. The screening will be followed by a discussion about freedom of expression and the role and mission of journalists during times of internal challenges. From: Ahram Online
