Paramount's "Transformers: Age of Extinction" was placed the first for debuting at 100 million U. S. dollars in revenue of ticket sales from 4,233 locations in North America, becoming the first movie of the year to garner this amount of earnings in its first weekend of screening.
"Transformers: Age of Extinction" delivered the fourth largest June opening weekend of all-time even without ticket price inflation adjustment, only behind last year's "Man of Steel," " Toy Story 3" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" in 2010 and 2009, respectively.
This sequel took in 10.7 million dollars from 353 IMAX locations in North American, becoming the second of all time in June behind last year's "Man of Steel."
Michael Bay, who successfully directed the last three " Transformers," embraced a lot of Chinese characters this time, which helped the film take in 90 million dollars in ticket sales from Chinese market. Internationally, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" grossed over 201 million dollars, according to Rentrak.
The movie's audience was 64 percent male and 58 percent were 25 years of age and over, who awarded it an A- CinemaScore. Only 17 percent of critics on Rotten Tomatoes, however, think highly of the film.
The Sony buddy comedy "22 Jump Street" was in a distant second place with 15.4 million dollars in ticket sales revenue, which brought its three-week total to 139.8 million dollars, eclipsing the entire run of 21 Jump Street (138.4 million dollars).
DreamWorks'"How to Train Your Dragon 2" was ranked the third as it saw its ticket sales drop by 47 percent from the previous week to 13.1 million dollars in its third week. It has grossed 121. 8 million dollars since its release.
Rounding out the 10 most popular films in North America this weekend, as estimated by studios, were "Think Like A Man Too" (10. 4 million dollars), "Maleficent" (8.2 million), "Jersey Boys" (7.6 million), "Edge of Tomorrow" (5.2 million), "The Fault In Our Stars" (4.8 million), "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" (3.3 million) and "Chef" (1.7 million).
