13 policemen injured in road accident in Pakistan's Karachi

At least 13 policemen were injured when their vehicle met an accident in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi on Sunday morning, local reports said.

The police vehicle carrying about 40 trainees turned turtle after hitting into a truck in the city. The injured policemen were shifted to a nearby hospital.

According to the latest statistics available from the Karachi traffic police, on average five accidents occur every two days in the city which is house to over 20 million people.

The data released by the traffic police in 2016 states that three major factors causing the road accidents in the city include unskilled drivers driving without a license, overspeeding and overtaking without indication.

Around 60 percent drivers behind the steering of both private and public transport do not have a valid driving licence, the data added.

On average 30,000 accident happen every year, and about 3,200 traffic policemen are deputed to regulate movement of 3.79 million vehicles whose number increases by 908 per day.

On average 40 percent patients received at the largest hospital of the city, Jinnah Post Graduate Hospital, get injured in traffic accidents, annually, the hospital's medical superintendent Seemi Jamali told local reports.
