French President Francois Hollande said that the US response to Syria's chemical attack should now be followed up at an international level "under the auspices of the United Nations if possible".
This could include tightening sanctions against Assad "preventing any further chemical attacks and the crushing by this regime of its own people" Hollande said at the conclusion of a defense council meeting.
The French President convened an emergency defense meeting to discuss next steps in Syria after US airstrikes targeting President Bashar Assad's government.
Hollande said he will hold the meeting with top security officials in Paris on Friday, as France tries to re-launch international peace negotiations for Syria. He called the US airstrikes a response to a chemical weapons attack that Western powers blame on Assad's forces.
