Upon the invitation of H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, His Highness the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani paid a State Visit on April 10-11, 2017 to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
Upon arrival at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani was accorded a warm welcome by H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. High ranking government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, Ambassador of the State of Qatar in Addis Ababa and Qatar Embassy staff members were also at the airport.
During the State Visit, the two leaders held bilateral talks in a friendly and cordial atmosphere during which they reiterated their strong commitment to enhance their countries ties of cooperation and friendship.
The two leaders took note with satisfaction of the expanding relations between their two countries and between their two peoples. They underscored the need to cooperate further on international and regional issues of common concern. They also highlighted the necessity of coordinating efforts with the international community in fighting terrorism, which represents a threat to peace, stability and security in East and West Africa, the Middle East, the Gulf region and the entire World.
H.E. Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn commended the role of the State of Qatar in resolving conflicts in the Horn of Africa, and in the Darfur region in Sudan.
H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, on his part commended Ethiopia’s efforts in bringing peace and stability in the Horn of Africa Region within the IGAD framework.
H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, expressed the readiness of the State of Qatar to provide a humanitarian assistance to draught victims in different parts of Ethiopia, and to support the efforts of the Government of Ethiopia for the development in education, health, infrastructure and energy. He also expressed the readiness to finance the establishment of a specialized hospital for kidney treatment.
In the realm of business and economic cooperation, the two leaders underlined their desire to enhance their economic cooperation, in both the private and public sectors. In this regard, they encourage the private sectors of both countries to increase their cooperation. His Highness also gave instructions to establish a loan portfolio for small and medium projects with the aim of finding job opportunities for the youth.
They also agreed to strengthen the political dialogue and consultation between the two countries. They further emphasized their keenness to participate in the efforts of the international community to maintain peace and security in their respective regions and the world at large.
At the conclusion of the State Visit of H.H. the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, H.E. Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on his part, expressed his gratitude to His Highness for visiting Ethiopia and for the cordial and fruitful discussions they held. On his part, H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani thanked H.E. Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, the Government and people of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, for the warm reception and hospitality accorded to him and his accompanying delegation. He also extended an invitation to H.E. Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn to pay an official visit to the State of Qatar at a date to be mutually agreed upon through diplomatic channels.
