A mosque in Toronto has been targeted by an arson attack. Just after 11p.m. Tuesday night, Toronto police were called to the Reign of Islamic Da’Wah Islamic Information Centre on Weston Road in Toronto, to investigate a suspicious fire on the building’s roof.
According to CBC News, flames were visible on the roof and the smell of burning plastic could be detected when police arrived at the scene. Three fire trucks were dispatched to deal with the situation.
Police and fire officials have determined that the cause of the fire was a small gas can, prompting an arson investigation into the incident.
There were no injuries reported and it remains unclear if anyone was in the building when the fire broke out.
Presumably, if arson is proven, which is appearing likely, the investigation will then move to discover a motive behind the deliberate setting of the fire to determine if the incident will need to be treated as a hate crime.
