The United States condemned on Tuesday the excessive use of forces by the Kenyan police forces against opposition protesters.
The United States deplores the excessive use of force by the Kenyan security services and the violence around the demonstrations on May 16 in the vicinity of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices in Nairobi and other cities, the US Embassy in Nairobi said in a press release on Tuesday.
The US urged the Kenyan security services to exercise restraint during demonstrations and to protect the rights of free speech, assembly, and political participation guaranteed by the Kenyan constitution, it added.
The US Embassy further welcomed announcements by Kenyan authorities that all reports of the excessive use of force would be investigated and those responsible be held accountable.
