The Pentagon said that the leader of the Afghan Taliban, Mullah Akhtar Mansour, has been likely killed by a drone strike in a remote part of Afghanistan.
Mansour was "actively involved with planning attacks against facilities in Kabul and across Afghanistan, presenting a threat to Afghan civilians and security forces, our personnel and coalition partners," the Defense Department said in a statement.
Mansour took over as leader of the Afghan Taliban from Mullah Mohammad Omar in July 2015, after it confirmed that Omar had died in 2013.
