At least three policemen were killed and five others wounded in a suicide attack targeting a police convoy on the Helmand-Kandahar highway in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan on Tuesday, said officials.
A senior police official, Col. Mohammad Ismail told media that a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into a police convoy that was returning to Kabul after delivering supplies to Helmand-based personnel.
Helmand deputy police chief Col. Bacha Gul Bakhtiyar confirmed that three policemen were killed and another five received injuries in the midday blast. The injured were shifted to the nearby hospital for immediate medical treatment.
Taliban rebels reportedly claimed responsibility for the suicide attack.
The attack came at a time when Taliban rebels have paced up their attacks on security forces following the withdrawal of NATO/ISAF forces from Afghanistan handing over the security control to Afghan local forces.
