A US airstrike in eastern Afghanistan killed at least 11 civilians and wounded 12, the Afghan government said Wednesday in a statement.
According to AP, the air raid took place late Tuesday in Kunar province's Narang district, and two children were among those killed, President Hamid Karzai's office quoted Governor Shujja ul Mulk Jalala as saying.
Local officials had said earlier that four civilians were killed and 10 injured in the airstrike targeting Taliban fighters.
The airstrike was requested by Afghan soldiers and police under Taliban attack, provincial police chief Abdul Habib Sayedkheli said.
Seven militants were killed but they also used villagers as human shields and four of them were also killed, Sayedkheli said.
