UN Special Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed
Sanaa - Arab Today

UN Special Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed for Yemen said on Tuesday that an announcement by the Houthi group and allies from the ousted president's party to unilaterally declare the formation of a new government in Sanaa is an obstacle to the peace process, the ABC News reported.

Ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh's General People's Congress and Ansar Allah, the political arm of the Shiite group known as Houthis, announced the agreement on Monday.

UN Special Envoy said in a statement that the announcement "does not serve the interests of the people of Yemen in these difficult times." The announcement came at a time that US-backed, UN-mediated peace efforts have faltered.

On his Facebook page, the special envoy urged the rivals fighting in Yemen to put disagreements aside and put interests of homeland above all other considerations.

He added that there was still a chance to pull Yemen back from the brink.
