The Jordanian court will review on Sunday the lawsuit filed by an Egyptian waiter who was assaulted by a Jordanian MP and his entourage at Lebnani Snack restaurant.
In statements late Wednesday following a phone call with Egyptian waiter Khaled Othman, Egyptian Minister of Manpower Gamal Sorour said the ministry is following up the case and the consulate has hired a lawyer to defend him and protect his rights.
He said the ministry will support Othman until restoring his rights and holding the assailants accountable.
During the phone call, Othman told the minister that he wants to go back to Egypt after staying peacefully for 12 years in Jordan.
The minister said if this is his desire, he will be welcomed and a good job will be secured for him.
Videos appearing to show a group of suited men including a Jordanian MP physically assaulting the Egyptian waiter went viral on Sunday.
After the videos achieved wide circulation the Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman, Ahmed Abu-Zeid, said Othman was hospitalized and the Egyptian Consul visited him there, and a police report was filed against the assailants.
"The Egyptian Consulate is following up on the legal action," Abu-Zeid added in the statement published on the foreign ministry's Facebook page.
Hisham El-Nakib, an Egyptian foreign ministry aide, has contacted the Jordanian ambassador in Cairo to confirm that Othman's rights will be honored and the assailants will be held accountable, the statement continued.
Jordanian media affairs minister Mohammad Al-Moumni told Jordanian state-owned agency PETRA on Sunday that bilateral relations with Egypt are on every level remarkable, and King Abdullah is in constant contact with his "brother" Abdel Fattah El Sisi, president of Egypt.
