Al Azhar hailed on Wednesday statements of Pope Francis of the Vatican in which he refused to associate Islam with violence.
In statements on his way back from Poland, Pope Francis said that it is wrong to associate violence and terrorism with Islam, noting that there are extremists of all religions even in Christianity.
Those statements reflect the pontiff's understanding of Islam's true nature and tolerant teachings, Al Azhar said in a statement.
