Egypt's Mufti Dr Shawqi Allam has refuted claims by extremist groups that the country does not abide by the teachings of Islam.
Such claims are baseless, Allam said Sunday, stressing that those groups misunderstand the Sharia.
The Islamic Sharia is based on three principles: monotheism, morals and work, the mufti made it clear.
He was speaking in a meeting with young imams and preachers.
Allam called for unified efforts among all institutions in Egypt to renew the religious discourse.
