Contacts are currently under way with the German authorities to repatriate convicted tycoon Khaled Shahin, who has arrived there from the UK. An official source, quoted by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, said on Wednesday that officials who have been tracking Shahin, a businessman convicted in a major corruption case who is at large, have located him in Frankfurt, where he arrived early this month by train. Shahin was serving a three-year term in prison for bribery and corruption in the Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company case, and the government granted him permission to leave the country for the US via London for medical treatment, on the basis of a medical report. Instead of going to the US, Shahin was reportedly staying in London where he was seen at a café “in good health”. The report sparked public anger and criticism of authorities in the Kingdom. Investigation in the case is still under way. Contacts made through diplomatic channels “clearly indicate that Shahin will not be allowed to return to the UK after he left”, the official said.
