The Libyan army on Monday seized more than 200 explosive bags smuggled inside a truck loaded with livestock in the east.
"Military police in Tubruq city on Monday seized a tanker believed to be carrying only livestock. However, after checking it was found to carry more than 200 explosive bags," an army official told Xinhua.
"The shipment of explosives was coming from the area of Emsa'ed on the Libyan-Egyptian border and heading to the city of Ajdabiya," added the official, who asked not to be named.
The official did not give further details about who is behind the smuggling, saying that "the case is now with the investigation authorities."
The Libyan desert witnesses many smuggling operations. The Libyan army succeeded more than once in controlling these operations, the last of which was on 25 April, where 30 mine bags and a number of weapons bound for smuggling to Egypt across the Libyan-Egyptian border were seized.
On March 23, the Libyan army seized 11 anti-tank explosive bags at the Libyan-Egyptian border, while on November 6 last year the army seized a car carrying 70 explosives bags near the area.
A large number of uncontrolled mines dating back to WWII are being sold by smugglers from Egypt and Libya to terrorist and criminal groups in both countries.
Some of those mines have been used in terrorist operations in both countries.
